PATE DE VERRE

Pate de verre means creating a paste from frit. Small or powdered frit is recommended for this process. The smaller the frit, the more opaque the casting.

To make the paste, you can use white glue mixed with distilled water, or mix the frit with plain distilled water. Always use a mask to prevent inhaling the glass particles when mixing.   Apply the paste to the sides of the mold with a palette knife or brush. Apply a thin coating of paste, approximately 1/16". You can tack fuse this first coat to about 1400ο F. to dry or use a hair dryer or let it dry on its own. When dry, add a second layer of the same thickness and press this layer tightly down. You don't want the glass to move during firing. If the mold is deep and sides have a significant slope, you can fill it with fiber paper to prevent the glass from moving.

CASTING

Casting means to fill a mold with glass and fuse.  You use basically the same schedule for casting that you would use for fusing adjusting the firing schedule for the thickness and size of the glass. The thicker and larger the slower you fire and cool.  Try 300ο per hour for each inch of casting. You can always go faster or slower with a little experimentation, as long as your glass doesn't crack.  Remember, as in fusing, soak the glass at about 1200ο so the glass can compact for about 15 minutes and then continue up to about 1500ο.  Each kiln is different in size and heating temperature. Depending on whether your kiln runs hotter or colder will determine the top firing temperature and how fast you can fire. Soak the glass about a half hour to 1 hour. In the beginning, when you do you are first casting, keep experimenting, you will find the right schedule for you according to your kiln. After firing, you can add more frit and re-fire if need be. NEVER REFUSE TO RE-FUSE.
